Hip-Hop Game Changer: De La Soul
Back when most rappers were wearing sweatsuits, gold chains, 4 fingered rings, and shell toed sneakers De La Soul emerged on the scene with a unique sound and a unique style. The eclectic clothing and the peace and love lyrics introduced the D.A.I.S.Y. age (da inner sound y'all). Along with A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, and Black Sheep De La Soul was an active member of the Native Tongue Posse. De La Soul gave rap music an alternative to the violence, poverty, and drug dealing so many other artists were portraying. Their influence came at a time when rap music need to "lighten up" a little and explore its kinder, gentler side. They paved the way for such artists as PM Dawn, Digable Planets, Mos Def, and Black Eyed Peas. Although the group has evolved from it's flower power beginnings the trio continues to have success applying their mark on the hip-hop landscape. These hip-hop trailblazers were honorees at the 2008 VH-1 Hip-Hop honors and will always be remembered for timeless classics like Me, Myself, and I, Stakes is High, and Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey).
